Kendall Arnold

Research Student

My name is Kendall Arnold, and I am a senior at Pawling High School. I have been a member of the Pawling Science Research Course since my sophomore year. This course provides students with the opportunity to pursue research on a topic of their choice. Students reach out to professional mentors in their chosen fields, develop a full-scale research project, and write a research paper. That research is then presented at various competitions and conferences. I am studying the field of Marine Biology, specifically coral restoration, and the effects of climate change on coral reefs. Aside from my research interests, I participate in a number of extracurricular activities. I am a member of my high school’s Varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams, serving as a captain for field hockey. Additionally, I am a member of 3 honor societies: French, Science, and National. I serve as President of the French National Honor Society and as Secretary of the Science National Honor Society. These organizations provide me with opportunities to volunteer and participate in my school community. Also, I am a member of a local theater company, which helps me to step outside of my comfort zone by participating in different activities.

Research Interests

I have always been fascinated by Marine Biology. Since I was a young child, I knew that it was something that I wanted to pursue. I chose to research the topic of coral reef rehabilitation and the impacts of environmental threats because of the imminent danger that these vital, diverse ecosystems are in due to various threats on local and global scales.

My research aims to address these threats in any way that I can and contribute to the knowledge that is currently public.

Mentors

A large part of the Science Research course is obtaining advice and guidance from experienced professionals in the student's selected field.

My mentors in particular played a significant role in helping me develop the methodology of my experiment. They provided advice regarding setting up the tanks, coral acclimation periods, measuring chemical parameters, etc.
